Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is also called a "talking treatment" because it involves talking, rather than medication.

Psychotherapy can help with:

  • Mood disorders - bipolar disorder, depression
  • Addictions
  • Eating disorders - anorexia or bulimia
  • Personality disorders
  • Anxiety disorders - obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), phobias, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Schizophrenia

Many people seek out therapy for a variety of reasons, which can include long periods of distressing feelings, struggling to cope with emotions or life situations, or relationship problems. On the other hand, some people simply come to therapy to gain a better understanding of themselves and their lives in an effort to grow psychologically.

Psychotherapy involves the development of a relationship between an individual and a trained psychologist. Psychotherapy is a two-way process, built on trust between the client and the psychologist, which forms the basis for ongoing treatment. During regular meetings, I will help you gain a deeper understanding of yourself in terms of feelings, behaviours, thoughts, and relationship dynamics.

Having a better understanding of yourself can lead to an exploration of dynamics which may currently not be working and thinking about how these could be changed. This is done by exploring current issues, past experiences, and what you would like to achieve with therapy.

Psychotherapy can help create new ways of looking at problems, and help people move towards a solution. Participants in therapy can gain a better understanding of their own goals and values and can develop skills for improving their lives and relationships.

To benefit fully from the process, it is important that an individual commit to the process of attending therapy regularly, and speak openly and honestly. Therapy can be a challenging experience where people may often experience unpleasant thoughts or feelings, or unexpected changes, however, this is part of the therapeutic process and will change.
